Years EP

Years was made with my good friends Kirsty Hughes and Sam Johnson in 2021, our second EP under the name Ampersand. I was keen to make greater use of their respective backgrounds in jazz music this time around, combined with the characteristic electronic melancholia of the first EP. I was also playing a lot of bass guitar and ukulele at the time, which made for a slightly unusual, highly enjoyable sonic palette.
A cover of Rozalla’s Everybody’s Free was set in motion by discovering our mutual love of the wedding sequence in Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo + Juliet (1996), whilst The Year the Albatross Came is based on Susanna Clarke’s beautiful novel Piranesi (2020). The latter song presented an opportunity to become the prog rocker I dreamed of being as a teenager, which was deeply satisfying.
